1999 may be remembered as the year of Joan of Arc: NBC created a miniseries in her honor, Carl Dreyer's long-lost The Passion of Joan of Arc was discovered in a mental hospital, and Facets re-released Jacques Rivette's Joan the Maid. Luc Besson rounds out the corpus with his stylistic and vaguely heretical grand-scale feature, The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc.

Besson (La Femme Nikita, The Fifth Element) challenges established notions about the Maid of Orleans as he creates a decidedly more human heroine than have previous biopics. The story line is the same--a young, illiterate peasant girl convinces the dauphin of France to give her an army, and she leads them to victory in Orleans, only to be burned at the stake for heresy--but Milla Jovovich, in the title role, is a woman possessed. Her influences are less than heavenly; as a child she witnesses the murder of her sister by the English, a death caused by the sister's giving her hiding place to young Joan, which causes an intense desire for revenge. Yes, God still speaks to Joan, but even this is undermined, as Dustin Hoffman, playing The Conscience, questions her motives.

Cinematically, The Messenger is stunning, with fantastical sequences of Joan in communication with higher powers. Yet the graphic violence (scenes include random decapitation and a dog gnawing on a body); the uneven accents, which make it difficult to tell who is fighting on which side; and the rewriting of lore may make this version of Joan of Arc appeal only to Besson fans. Jovovich is convincing, and while at times the film may drag (at times you wish they'd hurry up and burn her), it is a remarkable and insightful retelling of a well-known piece of history. --Jenny Brown

Jeanne d'Arc at last - Hugh W. Mcharry - Havana, Illinois
I saw Jeanne d'Arc in France the year it came out. It was the finest film I'd ever seen!

When THE MESSANGER was released in the USA, I was very disappointed that some of the most memorable scenes were left out and it lacked much of the drama and impact of the original.

Fortunately, this Blu-ray version restores these features, and you may even watch it in the original language with or without subtitles.

This may well be the best film ever made.

ROZEN MAIDEN AND TRAUMEND S1 S2 S.A.V.E.

Customer Reviews ::

Greatly Satisfied. - Eev -
This anime is a great series, and comes at a great price. It contains both the first and second seasons of Rozen Maiden (Season 1 "Rozen Maiden" Season 2 "Rozen Maiden: Traumend") with all the action and humor that is contained in the series. Now I noted on another customers review they marked the rating down and said it was because the set doesn't contain "Rozen Maiden: Overture." Let me clarify on that, Overture is a set of 2 OVA episodes not part of either series, and simply shows some of the history behind Shinku and Seiguintou. Being OVA's they were likely aired once on Japanes television after the series, and may have been included on one or two of the Original sets of the series sold (when it was 2 or 3 episodes on 1 disk in 1 box, that's it), but as they are not truly part of either the 1st or 2nd season, they are not included in this set. But don't let that stop you from purchasing this stupendous series.

Don Ameche (1985 Academy Award®, Best Supporting Actor), Hume Cronyn, Jack Gilford, Maureen Stapleton, Jessica Tandy, Gwen Verdon, Wilford Brimley and Steve Guttenberg star in this charming fantasy adventure.

An offbeat and charming comedy with elements of science fiction thrown in, director Ron Howard's (Ransom, Apollo 13) unlikely fantasy ponders the price of immortality and the power of everlasting love. A group of aliens travel to a Florida retirement community to rescue some long-stranded colleagues cocooned and buried beneath the sea. But as the aliens take on human form and stash their counterparts in a swimming pool, a group of elderly retirees discover the pool and after swimming in the water find themselves rejuvenated, with boundless energy and insatiable appetites. Soon the retirees are forced to choose between living out their lives on earth with their families, or leaving with the aliens and attaining immortality. More character driven than dependent on the incredible plot, the film's charm comes from its characters and the wonderful cast, including Don Ameche, who won an Academy Award for his role as one of the randy retirees. --Robert Lane

Daria - Is It Fall Yet?

Product Details

No Description Available.
Genre: Television
Rating: NR
Release Date: 15-JAN-2002
Media Type: DVD

Populated by a variety of memorable characters, Daria: Is It Fall Yet? packs more intelligent humor into 75 minutes than most sitcoms manage in a full season. With its diva of the disaffected in the title role, MTV's animated series moved into Ghost World territory with this enlightening look at summer vacation, beginning with Daria's dilemma about dating her best friend Jane's ex-boyfriend. Jane's tolerating pretentious bohemians at an artists' retreat, and while Daria's playing "prison guard" at a touchy-feely summer camp, her fashion-drone sister Quinn is getting tutored to compensate for dismal PSAT scores. The razor-sharp script uses Daria's ultra-dry wit and too-cool irony (at times excessive) to skewer everything from upper-crust snobbery to the hazards of adolescent romance. It turns out Daria's outer shell protects a likable adult-in-the-making as she learns lessons that feed her heart as well as her head. --Jeff Shannon

great for beginners - chelsea -
These dvds are very slow paced and definitely for beginners. So if that's what you're looking for then its great. She spends a lot of time talking about breathing and posture. Which again is very helpful if you have never done pilates or yoga before. I found it VERY slow and kinda boring. It does provide some very good stretches, which leave me feeling great, but definitely did not provide the core work out I was hoping for.

Product Details

Seven years of peace have passed since the defeat of the monstrous Cell, and the Z-Fighters have enjoyed a return to normal life. Goku has eagerly continued his training in Other World, Krillin has gotten married, and Gohan has renewed his scholarly pursuits while attempting to navigate the pitfalls of high school. Two fresh new Saiyan faces have also appeared on the scene—Goku’s son Goten, and Vegeta’s son Trunks!

Now, the time has come for the Z-Fighters to reunite, as the new World Martial Arts Tournament is set to begin. The greatest warriors on Earth have come together for their chance to capture the title of the reigning champion, Mr. Satan—but behind the scenes, sinister forces are at work. An evil eye watches the competitors’ every move, waiting for the opportune moment to strike. The action grows fierce on the tournament floor, but for the Z-Fighters, the real fight is only just beginning!

Stills from Dragon Ball Z: Season Seven (Click for larger image)

Seven years have passed since the tournament in which Gohan defeated Cell. Goku remains in the Next World, rather than risk attracting more evil beings to Earth, but he cheerfully trains under the watchful eye of King Kai (and the other Kais). After years of studying under his mother's tutelage, Gohan enters high school. Although he's awkward around his fellow students, he uses his incredible powers to fight crime in the nearby city as "Great Saiyaman." His feats of daring-do bring him into conflict with martial arts champion, crime fighter, and classmate Videl, the daughter of the obnoxious Mr. Satan. Their rivalry quickly turns into a maladroit mutual attraction. When a new tournament is announced, Gohan begins training himself and his seven-year-old brother Goten. Most of the season is devoted to the preparations for the tournament and its first rounds: Goku returns to Earth for one day to participate; Vegeta, Piccolo, Krillin, Android 18, Gohan, Videl, Goten, and Trunks all enter, with Mr. Satan ranked as the defending champion. Most of the story is silly, even by the undemanding standards of Dragon Ball Z, and fans generally regard this season as an interlude between the "Cell" and "Majin Buu" sagas. The latter begins in the final episodes, as two over-muscled thugs in the service of the evil wizard Babidi steal energy from Gohan's Super-Saiyan form. They hope to release the horrible monster Buu, the creation of Babidi's father Bibidi. Ranked against them are the Z Fighters, the Supreme Kai and his attendant Kibit. For those who leave no stone unturned, here's the sixth and final season of the greatest archeological dig in cartoon history. And its 26 episodes are treasure well worth excavating! Exploring every realm of popular parody, The Flintstones delighted kids but tickled adults even more with howlingly funny takeoffs of such "trendy" TV shows as Bewitched (with the voices of Elizabeth Montgomery and Dick York in Samantha), award-winning movies (My Fair Freddy and The Treasure of Sierra Madrock) and kitschy spoofs of Hollywood royalty in Return of Stoney Curtis. The show's writers even had the foresight to project into the future, as in The Long Long Long Weekend, guest-starring the series' newest character, space alien Gazoo.

This enchanting tale begins in Paris, when a kind and eccentric millionairess wills her entire estate to her family a family of adorable high-society cats. But when Edgar, the greedy butler, overhears her plan, he catnaps Duchess, the elegant, soft-spoken mother, and her three mischievous kittens and abandons them in the French countryside. Soon, they re being escorted home by the charming Thomas O Malley, a rough-and-tumble alley cat, who takes them to his pad along the way, where Scat Cat and his band of swingin jazz cats perform the memorable Ev rybody Wants To Be A Cat. Enriched by highstyle Disney animation (The New Yorker) and toe-tapping music by Academy Award® winning songwriters the Sherman brothers, The Aristocats is a timeless treasure and the last animated feature to get the nod from Walt Disney himself.

Duchess and her three kittens are enjoying the high life with their devoted human mistress until the wicked butler Edgar, with his eyes on a big inheritance, decides to dope them and get them out of the picture. How can these fragile creatures cope in the unfamiliar countryside and the meaner streets of Paris? Only by meeting the irrepressible alley cat O'Malley, a rough diamond with romance in his heart. After they get a taste of the wide dangerous world, he guides them home, and Edgar gets his just desserts at the wrong end of a horse. As always, it's really the voices rather than the animation that are the heart of the Disney magic: Phil Harris is brilliant as O'Malley, Eva Gabor as Duchess is... well... Eva Gabor; but perhaps the most memorable turns are by Pat Buttram and George Lindsay, who turn the old hounds Napoleon and Lafayette into a couple of bumbling Southern-fried rednecks. Their scenes with Edgar, and the musical numbers with Scat Cat and his cool-dude band, are classic. Most striking about seeing The Aristocats now is how deeply Disney's style of animation has changed since this was at the cutting edge in 1970. Perhaps the nostalgic, dated feel are just a result of being plonked down in Belle Epoque Paris, but the illustrations are fussier (a pity) and the animation and overall pace much less frenetic (sometimes a relief) than in more recent efforts such as Aladdin. --Richard Farr

Product Details

Margaret Tate (Sandra Bullock) terrorizes her publishing house co-workers with her abrasive, take-no-prisoners management style, especially her overworked assistant Andrew Paxton (Ryan Reynolds). But when Margaret is threatened with deportation to her native Canada because of an immigration technicality, the quick-thinking exec announces that she and Andrew are engaged to be married. Ambitious Andrew agrees to go along with her scheme—if there’s a long-awaited promotion in it for him. Everything is going according to Margaret’s plan, until an overzealous immigration official makes it his business to prove that the couple’s engagement is bogus. To demonstrate her commitment to her new fiancé, Margaret agrees to celebrate the 90th birthday of his colorful grandmother (Betty White) — in Alaska. The editrix’s type-A ways put her at odds with her eccentric future in-laws with hilarious consequences, until the Paxtons teach Margaret a thing or two about family.

Rom-com favorite Sandra Bullock and the affably charming Ryan Reynolds’s superb chemistry turn The Proposal from otherwise standard romantic-comedy fare to one that is entertaining and sure to garner laughs. Margaret (Sandra Bullock) is a workaholic, tyrannical book editor (reminiscent of The Devil Wears Prada) who suddenly finds her career in jeopardy as she faces deportation back to Canada. Her solution is to simply fake an engagement to her unsuspecting assistant Andrew (Ryan Reynolds), who in turn blackmails her for a promotion. However, when Margaret is forced to head to Alaska with Andrew to visit his family in an effort to make their story believable to the deportation officers, they soon realize that their plan may not be so simple after all. The supporting cast of Dad (Craig T. Nelson), Mom (Mary Steenburgen), and kooky Grandma (Betty White, still a scene-stealer at 87) is great casting that makes for many amusing scenes. Bottom line: witty Reynolds and Bullock are perfect sparring partners for each other and not half bad to look at either. --Lisanne Chastain

Pleasantly Surprised - Weezie -
I was pleasantly surprised with this movie. It may have been a bit predictable, but that does not change the humor presented in this movie. Ryan is always great at his subtle sarcasm and wit. Sandra walks and talks like an uptight city girl (no offense) and pulls it off. Betty White is wonderful as always. I even enjoyed the location depicted in the movie, Sitka, Alaska; very serene. But lets also not forget the character Ramon! The stripper scene was hilarious. A movie does not have to have twists, turns and surprise endings for it to be enjoyable. I laughed and had fun watching this movie and I will watch it again and again.
