The World at War (30th Anniversary Edition)

gotoshop

Product Details

More than 30 years after its initial broadcast, THE WORLD AT WAR remains the definitive visual history of World War II. Narrated by Academy Award winner Laurence Olivier and digitally re-mastered for DVD, this is epic history at its absolute best.

Unsurpassed in depth and scope, its 26 hour-long programs feature an extraordinary collection of newsreel, propaganda, and home-movie footage drawn from the archives of 18 nations, including color close-ups of Adolf Hitler taken by his mistress, that present an unvarnished perspective of the war's pivotal events. Penetrating interviews with eyewitness participants--from Hitler's secretary to Alger Hiss to ordinary citizens who stood outside the battle lines--add spine-tingling, first-hand accounts to an already unforgettable viewing experience.

Informative and unbiased, THE WORLD AT WAR is the recipient of numerous accolades, including an International Emmy Award, The National Television Critic's Award for Best Documentary, and knighthood for its creator, Sir Jeremy Isaacs.

Sir Jeremy Isaacs highly deserves the numerous awards for documentaries he has earned: the Royal Television Society's Desmond Davis Award, l'Ordre National du Mérit, an Emmy, and a knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II. His epic The World at War remains unsurpassed as the definitive visual history of World War II.

The Second World War was different from other wars in thousands of ways, one of which was the unparalleled scope of visual documents kept by the Axis and Allies of all their activities. As a result, this war is understood as much through written histories as it is through its powerful images. The Nazis were particularly thorough in documenting even the most abhorrent of the atrocities they were committing--in a surprising amount of color footage. The World at War was one of the first television documentaries that exploited these resources so completely, giving viewers an unbelievable visual guide to the greatest event in the 20th century. This is to say nothing of the excellent, comprehensible narrative. Some highlights:

  • A New Germany 1933-39: early German and Nazi documentation of Hitler's rise to power through the impending attack on Poland
  • Whirlwind: the early British losses in the blitz in the skies over Britain and in North Africa
  • Stalingrad: the turning point of the war and Germany's first defeat
  • Inside the Reich--Germany 1940-44: one of the most fascinating documentaries that exists on life inside Nazi Germany, from Lebensborn to the Hitler Youth
  • Morning: prior to Saving Private Ryan, one of the only unromanticized views of the Normandy invasion
  • Genocide: this film is one of the most widely shown introductions to the Holocaust
  • Japan 1941-45: although The World at War is decidedly focused more on the European theater, this is an important look into wartime Japan and its expansion--early 20th-century history that lead to Japan's role in World War II is superficial
  • The bomb: another widely shown documentary of the Manhattan Project, the Enola Gay, Hiroshima, and Nagasaki

The World at War will remain the definitive visual history of World War II, analogous to Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. No serious historian should be missing The World at War in a collection, and no student should leave school without having seen at least some of its salient episodes. Rarely is film so essential. --Erik J. Macki

Definitive WW2 history with great interviews - Bradley F. Smith - Miami Beach, FL
Made in 74, this 24 hour British documentary benefits from many interviews with still young WW2 vets from various countries, including Germany. We see and hear their remembrances of such events as the bombing of London. Fairly amazing stuff from people who look to be in their 50s and 60s when filmed, probably some time in the late 60s or early 70s? I have not seen all the episodes, but you will get hooked very quickly once you see only one or two. The sweep, the tone, the clips, the interviews, the big sense of epic history, they are all present. You might even want to own this for repeated viewing if you are really into it. It's that good.

Wings - The Sixth Season

gotoshop

Product Details

Created by the same production team responsible for the hugely popular series Cheers, Wings has a similarly homey, familiar feel. Replacing the Boston bar is a small airport on Nantucket Island. The denizens of the bar are replaced with pilots and airport personnel. What the viewers are left with is a delightful show revolving around Sandpiper Air Service, a tiny charter airline co owned by two handsome, charming brothers, a rival airline, Aeromass, and a lunch counter run the brothers' life-long friend, Helen.

Set in Nantucket, Wings focuses on a group of people who work at the same small airport and like each other so much (or are so bored) that they are constantly meddling in each other's business. The sixth season of the sitcom includes preparations for not one, but two weddings. Not to be outdone by Joe (Tim Daly) and Helen's (Crystal Bernard) engagement (finally!), busybody Roy (David Schramm) decides that he, too, wants to get married and sends away for a Russian mail-order bride. Feeling underappreciated, Fay (Rebecca Schull) quits her job only to regret her decision. And lovable but doltish Lowell (Thomas Haden Church) decides that the best thing to do with his inheritance money is to operate a wax museum. With the breakup of Joe's younger brother Brian (Steven Weber) and helicopter pilot Alex (Farrah Forke), a new romantic interest is brought in: Helen's sister Casey (Amy Yasbeck). Cabdriver Antonio (Tony Shalhoub) likes her, too, but he also has developed feelings for a woman who is engaged to his cousin. This season's slew of guest stars includes George Plimpton, former Mod Squad lead Peggy Lipton, and Debbie Reynolds as Helen and Casey's mother. All 26 episodes from the 1994-1995 season are included in this four-disc set that holds up surprisingly well over time. The chemistry between the ensemble cast is strong and the actors are likable, even when they're doing unlikeable things (We're talking about you, Roy!). --Jae-Ha Kim

Customer Reviews ::

One Great Season - Brian Berry -
This was one of the best seasons of Wings. The show had gathered, not lost steam at this time and the cast had jelled nicely with Amy Yasbeck's Kasey fitting in as if she had been there from day one.. The only sadness is in the fact that this was Thomas Haden Church's last full season. Other than that, Great scripts, nice chemistry between the cast and some really clever and funny moments make this one of the best seasons of Wings. But then again, I like them all.

Audio Commentary:Video Commentary on "Brave New Metropolis" and "World's Finest Part 1" with Bruce Timm, Paul Dini, Glen Murakami, James Tucker, Dan Riba and Moderator Jason Hillhouse
Featurette:THE DARK SIDE: BEHIND THE VILLAINS OF SUPERMAN: The Origin and Evolution of Superman's Adversaries

Superman: The Animated Series, Volume Two, the second of the series' three season run, continues the modern telling of the American myth Superman. Where the first season focuses on introducing Superman, Metropolis, and a few key bad guys, season two is all about the villains. A few key villains return, including Lobo, series favorite Metallo (voiced by Malcolm McDowell), and of course the evil genius Lex Luthor. But what defines season two is the introduction of new villains such as Superman's evil twin Bizarro (in "Identity Crisis" and "Bizarro's World"), Livewire (voiced by Tank Girl herself Lori Petty), and Luminus (voiced by Airplane!'s Robert Hays). Also new to the series is Mr. Mxyzptlk in one of the best episodes of the series, "Mxyzpixilated," starring the great Gilbert Gottfried as the quirky, interdimensional leprechaun. One of the series' highlights is the three-part episode "World's Finest." This trilogy is a great cross-over story with guest appearances from the other popular DC animated series Batman. Here the man of steel joins forces with the caped crusader to fight Gotham's arch villains the Joker (played by Mark Hamill) and Harley Quinn, who have recently teamed up with Metropolis's Lex Luthor in a plot to kill Superman. Superman: The Animated Series, Season Two is a sharp telling of the Superman story and not to be missed. --Rob Bracco

Customer Reviews ::

Superman at his best! - Neil Kambeaze - Eugene, OR
"Superman the Animated Series" Season 2 is yet another animated hit by the team that brought us "Batman the Animated Series" and "Tiny Toon Adventures". These animated shows were targeted primarily at children, but contained enough intelligent drama and comedy for adults to enjoy as well.

In addition to introducing such recurring villains as Bizarro Superman and Mister Mxyzptlk (pronounced Mix-yes-spit-lick), this season of Superman the Animated series includes a multi-episode crossover arc with the writers and voiceactors of "the Batman Animated Series" called "World's Finest". The plot of this 3-parter will have any Batman/Superman fan aching to see it: Lex Luthor teams up with the Joker (voiced by legend Mark Hamill) to kill Superman. Sensing that Joker's up to something, Batman (the one and only Kevin Conroy) follows him to Metropolis where he teams up with the man of steel to keep Luthor and Joker from making Metropolis their own criminal playpen. Without giving anything away, this 3-part arc contains some of the best moments in the series, not to mention a much-welcome encore performance by the voices of the Batman Animated Series, which had been off the air for a while when these episodes were made.

The other episode that really stood out for me was "Brave New Metropolis", in which Lois accidentally travels to another dimension (using Phantom Zone Technology) in which Superman has become fascist and evil, teaming up with Lex Luthor to police the citizens of Metropolis out of their freedoms. Much darker than the rest of the season, this episode shows a Superman that has been shaped by pain and tragedy into a numb, uncaring juggernaut. Luckily, Lois sees the good in this dark, broken Superman and guides him back to the good path. This episode contains the death of Lex Luthor (only in the alternate universe), one of the few explicit deaths to occur in the show. "Brave New Metropolis" also contains the first Lois/Superman kiss of the series, though it is with Alternate Dimension Superman as opposed to the "real" man of steel.

If you liked season one of "Superman the Animated Series", there's no reason not to check out season two. It's more of the same consistently high-quality animation that was spawned in a generation of lame attempts and dismal failures. This season will be especially enjoyed by fans of the Christopher Reeve Superman films, "Batman the Animated Series", "Powerpuff Girls" (which often parodies Superman) and "Smallville" (a reimagining of Clark Kent's youth).

Star Wars Trilogy (Full Screen Edition Without Bonus Disc)

gotoshop

Product Details

The story of rebel forces in a life-or-death struggle with the tyrant leaders of the Galactic Empire. Luke Skywalker and Han Solo team up with Princes

This 2005 three-disc edition of George Lucas's Star Wars Trilogy is basically the same set as the 2004 edition minus the bonus fourth disc. That means you get the three original films--A New Hope (1977), The Empire Strikes Back (1980), and Return of the Jedi (1983)--in their brilliant-looking and -sounding DVD glory. That means you also get both the changes that were made for the 1997 special-edition versions as well as the revisions that were made for the films' DVD debut, including Hayden Christensen (Anakin Skywalker) being added to a scene in Jedi, Ian McDiarmid (the Emperor) replacing Clive Revill with slightly revised lines in Empire, and Temuera Morrison rerecording Boba Fett's minimal dialogue, plus some other small details.

The discs don't qualify as bare-bones because they do include the commentary tracks recorded by Lucas, Ben Burtt (sound design), Dennis Muren (visual effects), and Carrie Fisher (Leia), plus Irvin Kershner added for The Empire Strikes Back. But what you lose is the fourth disc's 150-minute documentary Empire of Dreams: The Story of the Star Wars Trilogy, the three substantial featurettes ("The Characters of Star Wars," "The Birth of the Lightsaber," and "The Force Is with Them: The Legacy of Star Wars"), the Xbox sampler, the no-longer-exciting Episode III preview, and other odds and ends. Star Wars aficionados will certainly stick with the four-disc set, but casual fans might be satisfied with this lower-priced version. --David Horiuchi

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan - The Director's Cut (Two-Disc Special Collector's Edition)

gotoshop

Product Details

Although Star Trek: The Motion Picture had been a box-office hit, it was by no means a unanimous success with Star Trek fans, who responded much more favorably to the "classic Trek" scenario of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Inspired by the "Space Seed" episode of the original TV series, the film reunites newly promoted Admiral Kirk with his nemesis from the earlier episode--the genetically superior Khan (Ricardo Montalban)--who is now seeking revenge upon Kirk for having been imprisoned on a desolated planet. Their battle ensues over control of the Genesis device, a top-secret Starfleet project enabling entire planets to be transformed into life-supporting worlds, pioneered by the mother (Bibi Besch) of Kirk's estranged and now-adult son. While Mr. Spock mentors the young Vulcan Lt. Saavik (then-newcomer Kirstie Alley), Kirk must battle Khan to the bitter end, through a climactic starship chase and an unexpected crisis that will cost the life of Kirk's closest friend. This was the kind of character-based Trek that fans were waiting for, boosted by spectacular special effects, a great villain (thanks to Montalban's splendidly melodramatic performance), and a deft combination of humor, excitement, and wondrous imagination. Director Nicholas Meyer (who would play a substantial role in the success of future Trek features) handles the film as a combination of Moby Dick, Shakespearean tragedy, World War II submarine thriller, and dazzling science fiction, setting the successful tone for the Trek films that followed. --Jeff Shannon

Star Trek II - Mark J. House - USA
Star Trek is too boring compared to Star Wars, some say. This changes that. This movie is about two ships and two captains battling for their lives in a duel to the death. Nemesis is the same concept. This focuses more on battle than drama. If you like a more action-packed form of sci-fi, this is for you. All-star cast including Ricardo Montalban(Fantasy Island.etc.) and the usual Star Trek original cast. Easily a better Star Trek choice along with Nemesis.

Customer Reviews ::

Dissapearing Mary - L. K. Christoph -
Frances Hodgson Burnett's charming classic remains as enchanting as it was when I first read it as a child nearly 20 years ago. However, in re-reading it recently, I realized that the story's main characters seem to receive very compartmentalized attention throughout the narrative. It seems odd that the story begins with Mary, is apparently about Mary for the first half of the book, but then suddenly switches its focus to either Colin or the Garden as the main character in the second half. Mary diminishes; she is still a part of the book in the second half, but she no longer does any more significant growing or changing, and she becomes more of a supporting actress to Colin (and/or the Garden). The book ends with Colin and the Garden, and Mary is hardly even mentioned in the entire last chapter. It seems odd that the story would begin exclusively with Mary, be occupied with Mary for half the time, and then that Mary would sort of quietly fade away after that. It's a delightful story of two very sick and spoiled children learning how to care for one another and the Secret Garden, but the structure may leave something to be desired.

Urban Street Heat save your money - Brenda Cole -
MaDonna Grimes directions calling out the steps were great, but they need a different camera crew, the camera view while she is instructing you is either all over the place on her and then on the other dancers, or on the upper torso to the head instead of the feet when she is instructing a step, thought the camera angles made it difficult to follow, rarely was the view of the entire person making the routine difficult to follow. I really do not need the zoom in on the chest up to learn a move. I would save your money.
